Hospitals and healthcare environments are where we mark some of our most intimate moments and harrowing experiences; but often these spaces are among the least profound. This studio focusses on re-framing the idea of healthcare from one of ‘disease’ to ‘wellness’ by considering how the environment can minimize stress and optimize the psychological and sociological factors that increase positive patient outcomes. In particular, we ask how architecture and the perception of healthcare each influence the other. Can clinical spaces be normalized like civic spaces (such as museums, libraries, and public squares) or need they be spatially and psychologically isolated from everyday life?
